Twilight: Breaking Dawn Scores Fifth Biggest US Box Office Opening

The fourth vampire flick made a cool $139.5 million in its first weekend.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 1 has scored the fifth-biggest debut at the US box office, raking in a cool $139.5 million in its opening weekend.

Twihard fans raced to cinemas faster than Jacob Black running to try and stop Bella and Edward's wedding, giving Breaking Dawn - Part 1 a place in the record books.

The fourth instalment of the vampire flick collected $139.5 million in America - more than $30 million of which was from midnight showings early Friday - with it bagging an estimated $283.5 million worldwide.

Breaking Dawn - Part 1 now stands behind Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows Part 2 ($169.2 million), The Dark Knight ($158.4 million), Spider-Man 3 ($151.1 million) and 2009's New Moon ($169.2 million).

Animated penguin movie Happy Feet 2 was Twilight's nearest rival, taking $22 million at the US box office, with last week's No.1, Immortals falling to third place.

The final movie in the Twilight Saga will hit cinemas next year.
