Top 10 Nail Trends for Spring 2012

The Spring 2012 fashion shows presented an exciting array of new nail colors, techniques, and textures. Here are the top ten nail trends for the upcoming season.

COLORS

1. Nude/Pale – These subdued shades look refreshing and elegant. With all the color on the runways this season, nude or pale nails provided an interesting contrast in several designer shows. From nude and off-white to soft pink and honey tones, pale nails are certain to make an unexpected statement this season.
2. Chartreuse – If you’re feeling a bit more daring, you might want to try a bright chartreuse as was seen in Karen Walker’s Spring show. Depending on what you wear, the color can actually seem more neutral or very bright, which makes it a versatile choice.
3. Classic Red – This is a color that never goes out of style and can complement almost any look. At Christian Dior, models even had bright red lips to match. For something with a little more pop, you might try a coral shade instead.

TWO-TONE

4. Ombré – Jen Kao’s show featured an ombré-style manicure that had one color melting into another. This technique can be applied to just about any combination, from pale to bright colors.
5. Reverse French Manicure – This style features a thin white stripe at the bottom of the nail near the cuticle instead of at the top. It was seen at the Pamela Love jewelry presentation and it’s an unusual twist on a classic.
6. Geometric Patterns – A creative way to do a two-tone manicure is with a geometric pattern. Nicole Miller’s show featured checkered nails, while at Ruffian the models’ nails were painted with racing stripes.
PRINTS/TEXTURES
7. Glitter – Don’t worry, glittery nails aren’t going away anytime soon. This season, you can expect to see even more colors and sizes for glitter polish.

8. Bedazzled – If you want to take sparkly nails to the next level, you might try “bedazzling” your nails. The Dsquared runway show featured nails embellished with shiny sequins. These nails are certain to capture everyone’s attention.

9. Metallic – For a different type of shine, try metallic nails. Models at Missoni sported nails in all sorts of colors with a shiny chrome base. This type of manicure is perfect for a sleek modern look.

10. Subtle Prints – Prints are still popular as well, but many shows this season featured prints with subtle colors reflecting the nude trend, or prints mixed with a metallic sheen. From white lace to a camouflage of pearl and gold, subtle shiny prints are both daring and elegant.
